How to get a good prime on your pump!

Welcome to another blog post where I share some tips and tricks on how to maintain your swimming pool. Today, I'm going to explain how to prime a Hayward TriStar XE pool pump. This is a very important step to ensure that your pump works efficiently and prevents damage to the motor.

Priming a pool pump means filling it with water before turning it on. This creates a vacuum that allows the pump to draw water from the pool and circulate it through the filter and heater. If you don't prime your pump, you risk running it dry, which can cause overheating, cavitation, and reduced performance.

The good news is that priming a Hayward TriStar XE pool pump is very easy and takes only a few minutes. Here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Turn off the power to the pump at the breaker box. You don't wa

nt to accidentally turn on the pump while priming it.

  1. Locate the strainer basket lid on top of the pump. It's a clear plastic cover that has a handle and a locking ring.

  2. Loosen the locking ring by turning it counterclockwise. You may need to use a strap wrench if it's too tight.

  3. Lift the lid and remove the strainer basket. You may see some debris inside the basket, such as leaves, bugs, or dirt. Clean it out and rinse it with a hose.

  4. Fill the strainer housing with water using a garden hose or a bucket. Make sure there are no air bubbles in the water. You can tap on the sides of the housing to release any trapped air.

  5. Replace the strainer basket and the lid. Make sure the lid is aligned with the housing and the o-ring is in place.

  6. Tighten the locking ring by turning it clockwise until it clicks into place. Do not over-tighten it or you may damage the lid or the o-ring.

  7. Turn on the power to the pump at the breaker box. The pum

p should start automatically and begin to draw water from the pool.

  1. Check the pressure gauge on top of the filter. It should read between 10 and 15 psi when the pump is primed. If it's too high or too low, you may have a problem with your filter or your plumbing.

  2. Enjoy your sparkling clean pool!

That's all there is to it! Priming a Hayward TriStar XE pool pump is a simple task that can make a big difference in your pool's performance and longevity.
