Pressure Gauges - what a pool owner needs to know

Pressure gauge readings can vary depending on each pool's setup.

The vast majority of Cherry Hill customers will have a Hayward SwimClear cartridge filter - 2030, 4030, or 5030.

If your pool is equipped with the Vantage In-Floor Cleaning System the standard readings should be anywhere from 20-28 PSI. For pools without the cleaning system, using eyeball returns, the pressure gauge readings will typically read anywhere from 8-18 PSI.

Now, there are some setups that will not fall into this "normal" range. This applies to pools that have more turns in their piping and/or pools that have their equipment located far away from their pool. In this case, the pressure gauge readings may be higher than shown above.

As of 2022, Cherry Hill has been installing Hayward XE pumps (multi-speed) which can also affect the pressure reading. Because the pump is programable, if the homeowner chooses to lower the flow rate on their pump, they will see lower-than-normal pressure readings during these intervals.

If the pressure reading is higher than normal, it means that the cartridges are dirty and need to be cleaned or replaced. If the pressure reading is lower than normal, it means that there is a problem with the water flow, such as a clogged pump basket, skimmer, or plumbing line.

To check the pressure gauge readings on your Hayward SwimClear cartridge filter, you should follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the pool pump and any other equipment that uses water from the pool.

  2. Locate the pressure gauge on top of the filter head assembly. It should have a dial with numbers from 0 to 60 psi and a needle that points to the current pressure.

  3. Note the pressure reading on the gauge and compare it to the normal range for your filter. If the reading is within the normal range, your filter is working properly. If the reading is outside the normal range, you should troubleshoot the problem or contact a pool professional for assistance.

  4. Turn on the pool pump and any other equipment that uses water from the pool.

  5. Check the pressure gauge again after a few minutes of operation. The pressure reading should increase slightly as the water flows through the filter. If the reading does not change or changes significantly, there may be a problem with your filter or plumbing system.
