The basics of pool maintenance

Updated: May 11, 2023

If you have a swimming pool, you know how much fun and relaxation it can bring to you and your family. But you also know that it requires regular maintenance to keep it clean, safe, and sparkling. Here are some of the basics for maintaining a swimming pool that you should follow:

  • Circulate the water. Your pool pump and filter are essential for keeping the water moving and removing dirt, debris, and contaminants. You should run your pump for at least 8 to 12 hours a day, and check the filter pressure regularly. If it is too high, you may need to clean your filter.

  • Clean the pool. Besides the filter, you also need to manually clean your pool from time to time. This includes skimming the surface for leaves and insects, brushing the walls and floor for algae and stains, and vacuuming the bottom for dirt and sediment. You can use a manual or automatic pool cleaner for this task.

  • Balance the water chemistry. Your pool water needs to have the right levels of pH, alkalinity, chlorine, and other chemicals to prevent algae growth, corrosion, and irritation. You should test your water at least once or twice a week using a test kit or test strips, and adjust the chemicals as needed. A good range for pH is 7.4 to 7.6, and for chlorine is 1 to 3 ppm.

  • Shock the pool. Shocking is the process of adding a large dose of chlorine or other sanitizers to your pool to kill bacteria, algae, and organic matter. You should shock your pool every week or two, depending on how often you use it and how dirty it gets. Always shock your pool at night or when it is not in use, and wait until the chlorine level drops below 3 ppm before swimming again.

By following these basic steps, you can enjoy your swimming pool all season long without any hassle or worry. Remember to always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your pool equipment and chemicals, and consult a professional if you have any questions or problems.
