Why is my pump so loud? The impeller

The most common reason for a loud pump is built-up debris in the pump's impeller.

How to remove debris from the impeller of a Hayward XE pump

  • Turn off the power to the pump and disconnect it from the power source.

  • Remove the pump lid and basket. You may need a screwdriver to loosen the lid.

  • Use a garden hose to flush out any debris from the basket and the pump housing.

  • Locate the impeller, which is a fan-like part at the end of the motor shaft inside the pump housing.

  • Use a pair of needle-nose pliers or a wire coat hanger to carefully pull out any debris that is stuck in the impeller blades. Be gentle and avoid damaging the impeller or the motor shaft.

  • If the impeller is still clogged, you may need to remove the motor from the pump housing to access it better. To do this, unscrew the four bolts that hold the motor to the pump housing and pull out the motor. Be careful not to damage the seal or the gasket between the motor and the pump housing.

  • Once you have removed all the debris from the impeller, reassemble the pump in reverse order. Make sure to align the seal and the gasket properly and tighten the bolts securely.

  • Reconnect the power to the pump and turn it on. Check for any leaks or noises and make sure the pump is working properly.
