Believe it or not, heat pumps are the least expensive way to heat a pool. However, before diving in (haha) be sure to do your research as to understand how they work, their limitations, and their benefits.

Pros:
Low monthly cost
Environmentally friendly
Emits no pollution
Maintains heat without having to turn the unit on or off
Cons:
Unit cost is more expensive
Needs a minimum outside temperature to create heat
Takes up to 3x longer to get water up to heat
These "Cons" aren't all cons though. Yes, the unit costs more initially HOWEVER, you eliminate the need for gas plumbing which can be expensive. So, in the end, it is either a wash or you may even save money over installing a gas heater. And, yes, they do require a minimum outside temperature to create heat however, the reality is that most people aren't using their pools when it is below 50 degrees out. Lastly, it does take longer to get the pool water temperature up to your desired heat but once it gets up there it is designed to keep it there! We say, "set it and forget it"!
There are several heat pump calculators available online which show the savings vs using a gas heater. Here is a link to one: https://aquacomfort.com/calculator/
